A carrier settings update on iPhone pushes new APN, MMS, VoLTE and network configuration settings from your mobile network directly to your phone. They are small, automatic updates that keep your iPhone working correctly with your UK carrier's latest network settings.

What Is a Carrier Settings Update on iPhone?
A carrier settings update is a configuration package pushed by your UK mobile network (EE, O2, Vodafone, Three, or any MVNO) to your iPhone. It contains:
- APN settings — the access point values your iPhone uses for mobile data and MMS
- MMS configuration — MMSC address, proxy and port for picture messaging
- VoLTE settings — Voice over LTE configuration for HD calling
- Wi-Fi Calling settings — whether your carrier supports Wi-Fi calling and how to configure it
- Visual Voicemail settings — carrier-specific voicemail configuration
- Roaming configuration — data roaming APN and settings for international travel
Carrier settings are separate from iOS updates. You can have the latest iOS version and still have outdated carrier settings — both need to be current for your phone to work correctly with your network.
How to Update Carrier Settings on iPhone
Method 1: Settings › General › About (recommended)
- Connect your iPhone to Wi-Fi or mobile data.
- Go to Settings › General › About.
- Wait 10–15 seconds. If an update is available, a pop-up will appear: "Carrier Settings Update — An update is available for the carrier settings on your iPhone."
- Tap Update to install it. The update takes a few seconds and does not require a restart.
- After updating, toggle Aeroplane Mode on for 15 seconds then off to apply the new settings.
Method 2: Via iTunes / Finder (if no update appears)
- Connect your iPhone to a computer via USB.
- Open iTunes (Windows) or Finder (Mac).
- Select your iPhone and click Check for Update or Restore.
- iTunes/Finder checks Apple's servers for the latest carrier bundle for your network.
What Changes After a Carrier Settings Update?
After updating, your iPhone automatically applies new network configuration. You may notice:
- Mobile data working where it previously didn't (new APN applied)
- MMS/picture messaging fixed (updated MMSC settings)
- VoLTE (HD Voice) newly available or improved
- Wi-Fi Calling enabled or updated
- Visual Voicemail working correctly
- Better roaming performance abroad
The update does not delete personal data, apps, or settings.
What If the Carrier Settings Update Fails?
If the update fails or the pop-up disappears before you can accept it:
- Ensure you have a stable Wi-Fi or data connection and retry Settings › General › About.
- Restart your iPhone and check again — sometimes a restart clears a stuck update prompt.
- Remove and reinsert the SIM card — reinserting the SIM can trigger the carrier update prompt to reappear.
- Connect to iTunes or Finder on a computer and check for carrier updates via the desktop route.
- If no update appears and your network features are not working correctly, contact your carrier — they may need to re-provision your SIM or push the carrier bundle manually.
Troubleshooting After a Carrier Settings Update
If mobile data or MMS is still not working after updating carrier settings:
- Toggle Aeroplane Mode on for 30 seconds then off to force the new settings to apply.
- Restart your iPhone fully.
- Go to Settings › Mobile Data › Mobile Data Network and verify the APN field shows the correct value for your network. (On some iPhones this field is greyed out — that means the carrier bundle controls it automatically.)
- If the APN field is present and empty after the update, enter your network's correct APN value manually.
- Reset Network Settings if problems persist: Settings › General › Transfer or Reset iPhone › Reset › Reset Network Settings. Then re-check carrier settings at General › About.
