An eSIM does away with the plastic card entirely, living instead inside the phone itself. Instead of a physical SIM, your EE eSIM is downloaded as a profile over Wi-Fi or mobile data. Once active, it works exactly like a physical SIM — you can make calls, send texts and use mobile data on the EE network.
Supported EE devices start at iPhone XS, Pixel 3 and Galaxy S20, covering most current Android flagships; dual SIM phones run both SIM types together.

A stable Wi-Fi connection and the EE eSIM QR code are both needed first — the code usually arrives by email or shows in the EE app/account portal after ordering.
On iPhone: Settings → Mobile Data → Add eSIM → Use QR Code, scan EE's code, then label the line and choose primary or secondary.
Samsung and other Android: Settings, Connections, SIM Card Manager, Add Mobile Plan, scan the EE code. On a Pixel it's Settings → Network & Internet → SIMs → Add eSIM.

Scanning triggers an automatic download of the EE eSIM profile, typically one to five minutes with Wi-Fi active. The status bar displays EE's name when it finishes.
A failed EE eSIM activation normally traces to an incompatible handset, eSIM not switched on for the account, or a QR code already used — EE will reissue it.

When to replace your SIM card (EE eSIM Google Pixel Setup)
If the EE eSIM won't activate, confirm Wi-Fi, restart, and try again in Settings → Mobile Data.
Nothing showing after activation: toggle aeroplane mode, then check Settings → Mobile Data to make sure the EE line is set active.
A reset erasing the eSIM is a known issue on some phones — EE will re-provision it once the account checks out.
An EE eSIM QR code is single-use — transferring to a new phone needs the EE app or support.

eSIM vs physical SIM on EE — on Google Pixel
No speed or coverage gap between EE's eSIM and a physical SIM — eSIM just offers more convenience: no card to handle, instant activation, no swap for line changes. Physical SIMs remain necessary only on older, incompatible phones.
