An eSIM does away with the plastic card entirely, living inside the phone itself. The O2 profile downloads over Wi-Fi or mobile data, and once active behaves exactly like a physical SIM for calls, texts and data.
O2 eSIM support spans iPhone XS onward, Pixel 3 onward, Galaxy S20 onward, and most recent Android flagships — dual SIM phones can run a physical SIM and an eSIM together.

Have a solid Wi-Fi connection ready, plus the O2 eSIM QR code — typically emailed or shown in the O2 app or account portal after ordering.
iPhone: Settings → Mobile Data → Add eSIM, then Use QR Code and scan the one O2 sent. The prompts afterwards cover labelling the line and primary/secondary status.
Android/Samsung: Settings → Connections → SIM Card Manager → Add Mobile Plan, then scan O2's QR code when asked. Pixel owners use Settings → Network & Internet → SIMs → Add eSIM.

Once scanned, the O2 eSIM profile downloads automatically — usually one to five minutes. Keep Wi-Fi on throughout, and O2's network name should appear in the status bar when done.
A failed O2 eSIM activation usually comes down to an incompatible device, eSIM not enabled on the account, or a QR code already used — each one is single-use, and O2 can reissue it.

When to replace your SIM card (O2 eSIM Setup)
O2 eSIM stuck at activation: check Wi-Fi is connected, restart the phone, then retry from Settings → Mobile Data.
No bars once the eSIM is active: toggle aeroplane mode off and on. Still nothing? Check Settings → Mobile Data to confirm the O2 eSIM line is set as the active data SIM.
eSIM gone after a factory reset: some devices wipe eSIM profiles during a reset, so O2 will need to re-provision it with your account details to hand.
Moving an O2 eSIM to a new phone isn't a re-scan job — it needs the O2 app or a call to support, since the original code is single-use.

eSIM vs physical SIM on O2 (O2 eSIM Setup)
Speed and coverage are identical between an O2 eSIM and a physical card — both reach the full network. eSIM's edge is convenience: no plastic, instant activation, no swap to change lines. Physical SIMs only win on older, eSIM-incompatible phones.
