O2 Internet Not Working Fix Guide
This runs from quickest checks to the most involved. On O2, most reported data faults are resolved by the first two steps, so it's worth working through them before jumping to a SIM or account fix.
O2 operates its own network and is now part of Virgin Media O2 (VMO2), formed by the 2021 merger of O2 UK and Virgin Media. Several well-known MVNOs — giffgaff, Tesco Mobile, Sky Mobile and Lycamobile among them — buy wholesale access to O2's network rather than running their own masts.

Step 1: Check for O2 Network Outage
Before changing any settings, check whether O2 is experiencing a network outage in your area. An outage is the most common reason for sudden mobile data loss across an area.
If there is a confirmed outage in your area, no settings changes will help — wait for O2 to restore the network and check the status page for estimated recovery time. You can also check Downdetector for user-reported issues.
Step 2 — Quick O2 Fixes to Try First
Before touching any settings, run through this shortlist — it clears the majority of O2 data issues on its own.
- Check your data balance in My O2 first — an exhausted allowance is the single most common cause of "data not working" reports, and it's the quickest thing to rule out.
- A 30-second Aeroplane Mode toggle forces the phone to cleanly reconnect to the network.
- Make sure Mobile Data is switched on: Settings › Mobile Data (iPhone) or Settings › Connections › Mobile Data (Android).
- Do a full power cycle rather than a screen lock — it reloads network settings more thoroughly.
- Take the SIM out and back in with the phone off first; loose contacts cause erratic data drops.
Step 3: Verify O2 APN Settings
A wrong APN is a very common reason for data to stop working, particularly after a factory reset, OS update, SIM swap, or switching networks. Worth checking and re-entering if it looks off.
How to check APN settings on Android
- Head to Settings › Connections › Mobile Networks › Access Point Names (Samsung) or Settings › Network & internet › Mobile network › Access point names (Pixel).
- Look for the O2 APN, tap in, and check it reads exactly mobile.o2.co.uk — no extra spaces or typos.
- Check that APN Type includes at minimum default and supl for O2.
- Missing or wrong values? See the full O2 APN settings guide for the complete set.
- Save the O2 profile, activate it via the radio button, then restart.
How to check on iPhone
- Check Settings › Mobile Data › Mobile Data Network, if O2 shows that option.
- Check the APN field shows mobile.o2.co.uk.
- If it's greyed out, that's the carrier bundle in control — check Settings › General › About for an update.
Step 4 — More Advanced O2 Fixes
- Reset network settings: on Android, open APN settings and tap ⋮ › Reset to Default; on iPhone, go to Settings › General › Transfer or Reset iPhone › Reset › Reset Network Settings. Note: your saved Wi-Fi passwords will be cleared too.
- A quick check at Settings › General › About for a carrier settings update is worth doing first on iPhone.
- A pending OS update can be found and installed via Settings › System › Software Update.
- Try the O2 SIM in a different phone to see if the problem follows the SIM or stays with the handset.
- Put a different SIM into your own phone as the reverse test — if that works, the issue is your O2 SIM or account rather than the device.
- If the fault won't clear, request a free SIM replacement — physical wear is a genuine, if rare, cause.
- Call O2 on 202 (free from an O2 phone) or 0344 809 0202 for an account- or mast-level check if nothing above resolves it.
Common Causes of O2 Data Not Working
| Symptom | Likely Cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Sudden data loss, was working before | Network outage or SIM registration issue | Check status page; toggle Aeroplane Mode |
| After factory reset / phone change | APN settings not transferred | Re-enter APN settings: mobile.o2.co.uk |
| Data works then stops randomly | Poor signal, congestion, or SIM contact issue | Reseat SIM; check coverage map |
| Signal bars showing but no internet | Incorrect APN or data plan expired | Verify APN; check data balance in My O2 |
| Very slow speeds (not outright broken) | Data throttling, network congestion | Check if data cap hit; try different time of day |
| Works on Wi-Fi but not mobile data | Mobile data toggle off or APN wrong | Enable mobile data in Settings; verify APN |
| After iOS/Android update | OS update overwrote network settings | Reset network settings and re-enter APN |
