How to Enable EE Data Roaming
Roaming is switched off by default on nearly every phone — it's an anti-bill-shock measure, not a fault, so you'll need to turn it on yourself before you fly.
Android (Samsung, Pixel, and others)
- Go to Settings › Connections (Samsung) or Network & internet (Pixel) › Mobile Networks.
- Enable Data Roaming and confirm the resulting charges warning.
- On landing, a restart or 30-second Aeroplane Mode toggle picks up a local partner network.
- Confirm data works with a website or app before depending on it.
iPhone
- Open Settings › Cellular (or Mobile Data) › Cellular Data Options to reach EE's data settings.
- Switch Data Roaming ON.
- On arrival, toggle Aeroplane Mode on and off to pick up local coverage.
Roaming APN Settings — EE
EE uses the same APN for both UK data and international roaming: everywhere. You do not need to create a separate roaming APN. If mobile data stops working after arriving abroad, verify the APN is still set correctly and has not been overwritten by a local carrier profile.

EU Roaming Policy — EE
Yes — Smart Benefits plans include EU roaming in 47 destinations.
Checking your My EE roaming terms before you fly
Don't rely on memory or an old plan leaflet — roaming terms get updated. Open My EE, find your plan or account section, and look specifically for "Roaming", "Travel" or "International" — the exact wording varies by app version. Note the destination list and whether a daily fair-use cap applies to your allowance. If anything is unclear, Calling 150 (free from EE) or 0800 956 6000 can confirm before you leave the UK rather than after you land, since some account changes need a UK signal to process.
Where EE Roaming Is Included
EE roaming is available across multiple destination tiers. EU/EEA destinations typically use your UK allowance at no extra cost on eligible plans. Further destinations (USA, Australia, Asia) may require a roaming add-on or pay-per-use charges.
| Region | Coverage | Typical Cost |
|---|---|---|
| EU / EEA (27 countries) | ✅ Included on most plans | Uses UK allowance |
| Switzerland / Norway / Iceland | ✅ Included on most plans | Uses UK allowance |
| USA | ✅ Yes — available on pay-monthly plans with a roaming add-on | Add-on or roam charges may apply |
| Australia / New Zealand | ⚠ Check your plan | Add-on typically required |
| Rest of World | ⚠ Check coverage map | Pay-per-use or add-on |
Always verify specific country availability for your plan in the My EE app or on the EE website before travelling.
EE Roaming Charges & Data Caps Explained
Understanding your roaming costs prevents unexpected bills. Here is how EE roaming charges typically work:
- Inside EE's included destinations, the normal UK data, calls and texts allowance applies with no extra charge on most plans.
- Even inside EE's included roaming zones, some plans cap how much data you can actually use — the fair use policy is worth a look.
- Travel outside EE's included roaming zones and standard rates apply, which can be a lot steeper — an add-on before departure is worth checking.
- Hit EE's roaming data cap and it either cuts off completely or switches to a paid top-up, depending on the plan.
Troubleshooting EE Roaming
- Data roaming needs switching on via Settings › Mobile Networks before travelling — EE has it off by default.
- Make sure the country being visited is actually covered under the EE plan — coverage differs by tariff.
- Restart your phone after arriving to register on a local EE partner network.
- Flip Aeroplane Mode on for about half a minute, then off, to make the phone re-scan for a network.
- Check the APN hasn't been swapped for a local carrier profile and is still set correctly.
- Try manual network selection: Settings › Mobile Networks › Network Operators. Search for networks and select a EE partner manually.
- Check signal strength — in remote areas or certain countries, EE may have limited partner coverage.
- Contact EE support: 150 (free from EE) or 07953 966250.
